The Necessity of Vision #10″

Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that
keepeth the law, happy is he.”

If a vision is God’s solution to stop perishing, how do we know the difference between a vision and an idea, a thought? In my opinion, looking at visions in the Bible and observing life, a vision has some distinct characteristics. There are more, but here are a few.

Vision points a way. Said another way, a vision gives direction. It may give direction from a bad circumstance or to a new place. That place can be literal, like the promised land, or figurative. Either way, a vision provides clear direction. It says this is the way or direction we are headed as a business or organization. That is my life’s direction, so I plan and prioritize accordingly.

Vision provides the why. Vision says this is why we are doing this. It is why we are changing. It is why we are going to succeed or get “there.” It provides motivation. Vision is the motive for my actions. It says this is why we will create a better day or better way. Why is the key to any transformation or reformation! If we examine it, biblical God always reveals a why with the way. So if we have the why we will find the way! If we find the why to succeed, we will find the way!

Vision plans the what. Vision clarifies what steps or actions need to be taken to make the vision a reality. Vision is a big picture, and the details are added in time. It is a process. The big picture, however, also provides clear beginning steps. The vision will reveal the steps as they are needed. The vision is useless if we know the way to go without knowing what to do. What to do is revealed and becomes more apparent with each step of faith.

If our vision doesn’t provide a way and a why it is only an idea. It isn’t a vision yet. It isn’t a complete vision yet if there is no starting point or a “what” to do to get started. Biblically, a prophecy would say what would happen without any steps because it depended on God. Vision is dependent on our acting and action. A vision always points the way, provides the why, and plans what to do because it depends on our actions!
